Last Tuesday, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, did not only announce the birth of his daughter Max, but also that he wants to donate almost all of his shares. Currently they have a worth of about 45 billion dollars. Some people like this, not only on the social network, others say it is just PR and some people even wonder how it can be possible to earn so much money with a, well not so simple, website.
In an open letter to their daughter Max, Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan, welcome her to the world and also write, that they hope for her to live in a better world than they do now. They believe that every life has an equal value, and so people have to invest more on the future, not only of the people who are living in this very moment, but also those who aren’t born yet.
Zuckerberg claims that we, as a society, are currently spending more than 50 times more money in treating people who are already sick than in research. He thinks that technology accelerates the possibilities of preventing, managing and curing diseases. He hopes that in future the focus will be more on advancing human potential, showing what a human being is capable of, and promoting equality. In his mind, everyone should have the same chances, and be treated equally, no matter of race, creed, color, religion or ethnic background.
During their lives, Zuckerberg and Chan want to donate 99 % of their Facebook shares, which currently have a worth of about 45 billion dollars to organizations, that support developing technology, so more kids can get a good or even higher education. They feel a responsibility now that they have a daughter. With the birth of Max, it started not only a new chapter in their lives. They also wanna contribute to make a better future. They wanna join and support all the people who already invest money in education and new technology.
On Zuckerberg’s Facebook page, the letter was shared more than 250,000 times, and almost 1.5 million people liked it. But there were also people complaining if they had as much money as Zuckerberg, they would easily give away some of it. Some say this is just PR, so that Facebook gets more attention and to gain even more money. They say if Zuckerberg and Chan want to donate money, they can do that without making such a big announcement. Because giving is more about doing it and less about sharing a plan of what to do in future. Some argue that Zuckerberg just donates that much money to pay less taxes. Because of all the critics, Zuckerberg posted another message on his Facebook page yesterday. He explains how the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative is structured, that they fund non-profit organizations and denies to receive a tax benefit.
Whatever you think, if the way he spends his billions is good or just PR, there are also those people, to who it simply seems to be unbelievable that is it possible to become this rich creating an online network website.
What do you think of the letter and the donation? Do you like it or do you think it’s just PR? Please feel free to share your thoughts.
